Three to Tango

Grade: D

Three to Tango is a flyweight romantic comedy with a storyline that reminds me of the old TV show, "Three’s Company." Remember the running gag of how Mr. Roper always thought Jack was gay? That tired idea is alive and well in this new movie. Oscar Novak (Matthew Perry of TV’s "Friends") is a Chicago architect in partnership with another architect named Peter (Oliver Platt), who happens to be gay. They are bidding to win a huge contract from wealthy builder Charles Newman (Dylan McDermott) to design an arts center renovation.

Charles is married, but the obnoxious fat cat is having an affair with a young babe artist named Amy Post (Neve Campbell). Figuring that Oscar is gay, Charles entrusts the young architect to escort Amy to an art gallery opening.

Oscar and Amy bond by getting sick together after eating tuna melts. Guess what happens? Oscar falls in love with Amy. That’s sweet, except that he’s supposed to be gay. Amy thinks he’s gay. Not to mention that even though Oscar has been schmoozing Charles for the building contract, he’s about to steal the man’s mistress. How uncouth. How financially suicidal. How dreadfully formulaic and predictable.

Save this script for a reunion episode of "Three’s Company," when Jack runs off and elopes with Mrs. Roper.
